Sustainable Sportswear: A Practical Guide to Recycled Polyester Activewear for Brands

Sustainability used to be a nice extra in sportswear. Today it is a question that sports brands, clubs and retailers hear from their own customers: what is this kit made from, and where was it made? One of the most practical answers is recycled polyester, often called rPET.

This guide explains what recycled polyester is, how it performs, what changes in production, and how activewear brands can start offering more sustainable ranges without changing how their products look or feel.

What is recycled polyester?

Recycled polyester is made from plastic that has already been used, most commonly post-consumer plastic bottles. The plastic is cleaned, shredded into flakes, melted and spun into new yarn. That yarn is then knitted or woven into fabric in the same way as standard (virgin) polyester.

The result looks and feels almost the same as regular polyester, which is why it has become a popular option for jerseys, leggings, training tops and tracksuits.

Does recycled polyester perform as well?

For most activewear, yes. Good quality recycled polyester can offer the same key properties athletes expect:

  • Moisture wicking that pulls sweat away from the skin
  • Quick drying after training or washing
  • Stretch and recovery when blended with elastane for leggings and compression wear
  • Durability for kits that are washed after every match
  • Print compatibility, including full dye sublimation

As with any fabric, quality varies between mills. That is why it is worth testing a sample for colour, handfeel and fit before committing to a full range.

Popular sustainable activewear products

  • Sublimated team jerseys and shorts in recycled polyester mesh
  • Gym leggings and sports bras in recycled polyester and elastane blends
  • Running tops and cycling jerseys where light weight matters
  • Tracksuits and training jackets in recycled poly-knit
  • Organic cotton tees and hoodies for lifestyle and merchandise ranges

Beyond the fabric: other ways to reduce impact

Fabric is the biggest decision, but it is not the only one. Brands that want a more responsible range can also look at:

  • Made-to-order production: producing the quantities you actually need reduces dead stock and waste.
  • Smarter pattern cutting: well-planned cutting layouts use more of every fabric roll.
  • Durable construction: strong stitching and long-lasting prints mean kits stay in use for more seasons.
  • Lighter packaging: recyclable poly bags, paper hang tags and fewer inserts.
  • Consolidated shipping: shipping one well-planned bulk order instead of many small ones.

How to talk about sustainability honestly

Customers notice when sustainability claims are vague. If you launch a recycled range, be specific: say which products use recycled fabric and roughly what share of the fabric is recycled. Ask your fabric supplier which certifications their material carries, and only mention the ones you can document. Clear, honest labels build more trust than broad words like “eco” or “green”.

Getting started with a sustainable range

  1. Pick two or three hero products, such as a jersey, a pair of leggings and a tracksuit, rather than converting your whole catalogue at once.
  2. Order samples and test them in real training sessions.
  3. Compare costs: recycled fabric can cost a little more, so plan your pricing early.
  4. Plan your story for product pages, hang tags and social media.
  5. Launch, listen and expand the range based on customer feedback.
